Success for St Patrick's at ABC Junior Sports Awards

The entire St. Patrick’s Grammar School community shares in the success of the sports department on their double win at the prestigious ABC Junior Sports Awards 2020. The All Ireland winning U19 Basketballers won the title of Youth School Team of the Year and their coach, Mrs Roseanne Slane, deservedly won the title of School Coach of the Year in a recent virtual ceremony.

The U19 basketball team defeated Rathmore in the Ulster Final and headed to Dublin for the playoffs and defeated Donegal to qualify for the quarter finals. After returning to Dublin, the team had impressive wins against Haywood Community College in the quarter final and defeating Castletroy in the semi final. In the final the team played Colaiste Na Sceilge, Kerry, and after an end to end game, Armagh won by 69-61.

Fionntan Oliver’s two free throws with a minute to go, gave the Sandy Hill students a three-point lead and Michael Mc Gleenan stole the inbound ball to secure the win, securing the All-Ireland U-19 title for the first time in many years.

School Coach of the Year, Mrs Slane, has been instrumental in the development of basketball as an extra-curricular sport on the school calendar, giving freely of her time to prepare basketball teams of all ages and abilities. She is a coach that helps out not only with the successful U 19 team but also assists with the year 8, 10 and 12 teams. She is always researching new ideas and coming up with innovative coaching drills and games to improve school basketball training sessions. She brings a great energy to the basketball sessions and loves working with the individual students to get the best out of each one. Mrs Slane is a great communicator and this was highlighted during the U19 team’s successful All Ireland campaign.

In the promotion of the game in St. Patrick’s, she helped to organise a basketball tour to the United States where the U19 team played a tournament in Brooklyn, New York, which had a major impact on their development as young men and improved their confidence as athletes. She is always challenging the students to achieve the best of their talents and play as a team, thus reflecting the school motto ‘Fratres in Unum’ which translates as Brothers Together.

We wish Mrs Slane and her men every continued success in the future.

Principal of St.Patrick’s, Mr Clarke, is understandably proud of the team’s achievements, commenting,

“It is a great honour for the boys, coaches and the school community to receive the recognition from the ABC sports awards.  I am absolutely delighted.  The boys and Mrs Slane thoroughly deserve these accolades having won two All-Ireland titles in two years, first at under 16 and then again at under 19 level.  It is a welcome shot of positivity during the current difficult times and a reminder of the important part that sport plays in the lives of so many staff, students and families in St Patrick’s Grammar School.”
